DVLA introduces four changes for medical licence renewals

The DVLA is rolling out four measures to improve driving licence renewals for motorists with medical conditions, as rising application numbers continue to cause delays. The changes aim to speed up decisions and keep drivers better informed while their applications are being processed.

So far in the 2026/27 financial year, the agency is taking an average of 62.3 working days to make licensing decisions in medical cases. That equates to roughly three calendar months, which could leave some motorists uncertain about their right to drive during the wait.

New Systems and Digital Portal

The DVLA has introduced a new casework system designed to improve how medical licence applications are handled. The agency expects the system to streamline processes and deliver a more efficient service for drivers with medical conditions.

A new digital medical services portal has also been launched to support applications covering around 1,600 medical conditions. Improvements have been made to services for provisional licence applicants and for drivers renewing their licences at age 70 or over.

Text Updates and Extra Staff

Text message updates are being trialled for drivers who have agreed to receive notifications this way. The aim is to keep applicants informed about the progress of their medical driving licence applications.

The DVLA is also recruiting additional staff to manage the growing number of applications. The extra resources are intended to reduce the backlog, ease pressure on the service and improve decision-making times.

Reasons for Delays and Advice

Delays are being driven by an increase in the number and complexity of medical applications, with some cases requiring further investigations or information from GPs and other healthcare professionals. Drivers with short-term medical licences may be particularly affected, as they must renew at regular intervals, although the DVLA sends reminders 90 days before expiry.

The DVLA says it will continue contacting applicants when further information or action is needed on their cases. Motorists are advised to allow plenty of time for renewals and to respond promptly to requests for additional medical information to help avoid further delays.
