YouTuber Explores £40,000 'Narrowest House' in Greater Manchester

In a fascinating property hunt, YouTube content creator David Burnip, who operates under the channel name Wandering Turnip, has visited what he believes could be the narrowest house currently on the market in England and Wales. The terraced property, located in Tyldesley, Greater Manchester, is heading to auction with a modest guide price of just £40,000.

A Quest for the Tiniest Properties

David Burnip embarked on this exploration as part of his ongoing mission to track down and showcase some of the most compact and affordable homes available across England and Wales. His tour did not stop at the Manchester terrace; it also included a rundown dwelling in Yorkshire, a slender residence in Kent, and a £60,000 log cabin situated in Llangollen, North Wales.

Upon arriving in Tyldesley, David immediately noted that the end-of-terrace house appeared exceptionally small. To put its dimensions to the test, he used a rather unconventional measuring technique: his own arm span. In his video documentation, he remarked, "It's about just over me with my arms out, now it does go back a fair bit, so although it's narrow that way, the width of it is alright, and it's got a garden as well."

Inside the Slender Home

Stepping through the front door, David acknowledged that the interior space felt a little bit wider than he had anticipated, though he maintained that it remained "super narrow." He found himself genuinely puzzled about how future owners might arrange furniture in such confined quarters, as reported by the Manchester Evening News.

Surveying the lounge area, he mused, "Imagine trying to fit a sofa in here. That would feel so cramped, or a dining table in the kitchen. It's so interesting to see how a super narrow house is laid out and you could do something super creative and fun."

David was particularly taken aback by the £40,000 asking price. Estate agents McHugh and Co have listed the property as one that "requires modernisation" ahead of its auction date on February 10. The listing also highlights its convenient proximity to local amenities, including Atherton Train Station and The Common.

Surprising Features and Space

The presenter was impressed with the budget-friendly kitchen, which features just a cooker and a sink, along with the added bonus of outside space. He noted, "It comes with a narrow garden and, say what you want about a narrow garden, a narrow garden is better than no garden."

Venturing upstairs, David explored the bedrooms—where occupants might need to opt for a single bed—and the bathroom. He was pleasantly surprised by how spacious the sleeping quarters actually were, discovering that the property felt more generous than his initial impressions had suggested.

He explained, "The rooms are actually decent sized. I was pleasantly surprised. I thought I could touch both sides but when I did this in a clip, it made me look tiny, which made me realise maybe I am tiny and a tiny house is suited for me."

Ideal for Solo Living

David concluded his tour by declaring the house "ace" and suggested it would be perfectly suited for someone living alone. Potential buyers should be aware that it is a leasehold property, with a minimal annual peppercorn ground rent of just £1.50.

Other Compact Finds on the Market

During his property hunt, David also came across what he believed to be an even narrower property in Chatham, Kent. This house, listed online for £80,000, was also set to go under the hammer. Despite appearing "looked roomy" inside, David expressed concerns that it might feel "cramped" once furnished.

In Burnley, he explored a "classic terrace house," a two-up, two-down property. He found the £20,000 Queensberry home "cute" when viewing the listing, confessing his fondness for traditional terraced properties, though he acknowledged they could be "awful" for larger families and pet owners.

David remarked, "I've never seen a house that's on for this cheap that's in such a good state." He continued, "This house from the outside seems so, so small. You come in and all of the rooms seem so spacious. A nice sized bathroom, only a tiny bit of black mould. This house would be really nice for a couple. You could do something really nice."
