Wigan New Market Hall Opening Delayed to Spring 2027

Wigan's new market hall, part of the £135m Fettlers redevelopment, will now open in spring 2027, several months later than initially anticipated. The delay follows engagement with traders, according to Wigan Council, which said it met with trader representatives this week to provide an update on the new market and its operational plans.

Revised Timetable Allows Final Christmas in Old Market

The council confirmed that Wigan Market at Fettlers will open in spring 2027, giving time for both the authority and traders to shape a venue that supports existing businesses and offers the best possible visitor experience in the town centre. As recently as April, the council's leadership had stated the market hall would open before the end of 2026. The new timetable also means traders will have the opportunity to enjoy one final Christmas trading period in the current market before relocating.

Background of the Fettlers Development

The wider £135m Fettlers redevelopment of what was Wigan Galleries began in 2022 and has been carried out by Cityheart and demolition contractor BCEGI Construction UK Ltd. The market will be operated directly by Wigan Council. The council said additional work is now being undertaken to focus on developing an operating model that works for the people at the heart of the market. This insight is feeding into the final layout of the building's internal design, ensuring long-standing businesses remain central to one of the borough's most significant regeneration projects.

Council Leader Emphasizes Heritage and Collaboration

Coun Dane Anderton, portfolio holder for economic development and regeneration at Wigan Council, said: “Wigan has been a market town for centuries and that heritage remains an important part of our identity. The new market will honour that tradition while creating something fit for future generations. By taking the time now to work closely with traders, we’re ensuring we deliver a market that everybody can be proud of from day one. We’ve listened carefully to what traders have told us. They want a market that works for them and their customers, and they want to make the move at the right time for their businesses. The additional time allows us to incorporate that feedback into the design while ensuring traders can benefit from the important Christmas trading period.”

Features of the New Market and Wider Development

The council said the new market will provide a modern, welcoming home for traditional market traders alongside complementary food, drink and independent retail offers. It will play a central role in attracting visitors into the town centre, supporting local businesses and strengthening Wigan's market heritage. Other elements of the Fettlers development include a hotel, flexible office 'Pavilion' building, a multi-media centre, 450 homes and a new public square. Further updates on the market's opening programme and trader engagement activity will be shared as the project progresses.
