In a bold move to escape soaring mortgage costs, a 26-year-old woman has invested £20,000 in converting a van into her full-time home, slashing her monthly living expenses to a mere £600. Heidi Elliott purchased a 2015 Ford Transit high top for £15,000 and spent the past year crafting what she describes as her 'dream apartment on wheels', complete with a pink and white interior, separate sleeping and lounge areas, an oven, a shower facility, a skylight, and a dresser.
Escaping the Mortgage Trap
Heidi, who travels across the UK while working as a freelance photographer and creating content for TikTok, explained her decision to embrace van life. 'I would so much rather do this than be stuck paying a £2,000 mortgage a month,' she said. 'You appreciate things more. My lifestyle means I only spend £600 a month on bills.' Before this change, she lived with her family, paying minimal rent, but now enjoys greater financial freedom and reduced work pressure as a freelancer.
Monthly Cost Breakdown
Her monthly outgoings are meticulously managed: £200 for food, £250 for petrol, £95 for a Starlink Wi-Fi subscription, and £130 for van insurance and tax, totaling £675. This is significantly lower than the average UK household expenditure, which was £623.30 per week in the financial year ending 2024. Heidi emphasized, 'Living in a van is a lot cheaper than any other lifestyle. I've always tried to keep my outgoings as low as possible.'
Journey to Van Life
Heidi's nomadic lifestyle began in 2020 during lockdown, when she bought her first van. Over the years, she has lived in various vehicles, including a narrowboat and a Peugeot Boxer, before settling into her current Ford Transit. 'I originally got the van on finance, and I was living in it and working full time. It wasn't all glitz and glamour initially,' she recalled. Working allowed her to pay off the van, and she incorporated lessons from past experiences, such as ensuring a fixed bed for comfort and privacy.
Design and Features
The van's thoughtful layout includes a rhino roof rack, 300 watts of solar panels, and high-spec plumbing and electrical systems. Heidi highlighted the convenience of her setup: 'Aesthetically, I love my seating area because I have the option of being there or being in bed in a separate space—you feel like you're in a different room.' For her online work, the Starlink connection has been a 'game changer,' enabling reliable internet access on the go.
Advice for Aspiring Van Dwellers
For those considering a similar lifestyle, Heidi advises starting simply. 'Get a bog-standard van that's not converted and start living straight away,' she recommended. 'Just get out there to start with. Are you converting the van or does the van convert you? I feel like I've got more time to talk to people, and it makes you—build it as you go.' She noted that while her van is 'bougie and expensive,' it doesn't have to be, encouraging others to tailor their setups to their needs and budgets.
Heidi's story reflects a growing trend of individuals seeking alternative living arrangements amid high housing costs, showcasing how creativity and minimalism can lead to financial savings and personal fulfillment. With plans to add all-terrain tyres and a respray, she continues to refine her mobile home, proving that van life can offer both practicality and a sense of adventure.
