Tesco has announced it will scrap delivery fees for its Whoosh service on orders over £25 on selected World Cup match days, including July 15 and July 19. The move comes as England prepares for a World Cup semi-final, with the retailer anticipating a surge in demand for match-day essentials.
Free Delivery Dates and Conditions
Customers using Tesco Whoosh, which delivers groceries from local stores in as little as 20 minutes, will receive free delivery on orders of £25 or more on the following dates: Wednesday July 15 for the game against Argentina, and Sunday July 19, even if England is not playing. The benefit also applies from Monday July 20 to Sunday July 26, the week after the World Cup final.
The change began with England's quarter-final clash with Norway, where free delivery was also offered. A Tesco spokesman said: “Excitement is building across the country with customers enjoying the summer weather, hosting gatherings, and getting involved in the build up to England’s crucial match. This is expected to be one of our busiest weekends this year for sales of barbecue food and drinks, and we have some great deals available for people stocking up on all their match day essentials.”
Expected Sales and Demand
Tesco revealed it expected to sell over four million packs of crisps and nuts, approximately 2.7 million lagers, over a million packs of barbecue meat, nearly 1.5 million packs of coleslaw and dip, and 800,000 packs of ice cubes ahead of England's game against Norway. The spokesman added: “Last Sunday also saw one of the busiest ever days for Tesco Whoosh deliveries as customers chose rapid grocery deliveries to help them enjoy the England game and get what they need from as little as 20 minutes. We expect to see high demand again as we’re removing delivery charges for future game dates.”
Other Retailers Following Suit
Tesco is not alone in offering delivery incentives during the World Cup. Co-op extended its online delivery hours to 1am for the England game, active from 130 stores. Boots and Waitrose have also introduced similar free delivery benefits for customers watching the matches.
