Peterhead, a seaside town in Aberdeenshire, has been named one of the UK's most wallet-friendly retirement destinations by WorldAtlas, with an average property price of approximately £115,000. This figure is significantly lower than the UK House Price Index average for Scotland of £192,000, making it the most affordable option among the eight locations listed.

Peterhead's Attractions and Amenities

According to WorldAtlas, Peterhead is renowned for its seafood and maritime heritage. Highlights include the Peterhead Fish Market, one of the largest in Europe for whitefish and pelagic species, which holds an AA gold-standard rating from the British Retail Consortium. Other attractions include the Arc Cinema, featuring five screens and Monday subtitled screenings for the hard of hearing, and the Powerzone Strength Gym, suitable for both beginners and seasoned athletes. The Aberdeenshire Sailing Trust offers windsurfing courses and adult sailing on Peterhead Bay.

WorldAtlas stated: "On the east coast of Scotland, this Aberdeenshire fishing town has the lowest average sold price on this list at £115,678. Fishing runs the local economy, and its renowned Peterhead Fish Market sits at Europe's largest port for whitefish and pelagic species."

Saltcoats: Another Scottish Wallet-Friendly Option

Another Scottish town on the list is Saltcoats in North Ayrshire, with an average property price of £137,932. Saltcoats was praised for its seafront, the North Ayrshire Heritage Centre, and eateries such as Oscar's restaurant and Motherland Spice. The Auchenharvie Leisure Centre offers community classes for older adults, including Tuesday aquatics sessions and Saturday seated acupressure. WorldAtlas noted that campaigners are working to restore the Saltcoats Bathing Pond, a historic tidal pool.

WorldAtlas wrote: "About a 25-minute drive from Largs, Saltcoats also sits on the Firth of Clyde in Ayrshire, with a good seafront and a lower average price of £137,932."
