Live at Sea Permanently: New Cruise Ship Costs Less Than a London Flat
New residential cruise ship cheaper than London property

Imagine finishing a luxury cruise and never having to disembark. For those who have dreamt of a permanent life on the ocean waves, a US company is turning that fantasy into a tangible reality with plans for a new residential cruise ship – and the starting price is notably lower than buying an average flat in London.

A New Horizon in Ocean Living

Villa Vie Residences, which already operates the residential ship Odyssey, has announced an ambitious expansion named Project Lumina. The project involves acquiring a luxury vessel where people can purchase cabins to live at sea either full-time or part-time. The firm suggests this all-inclusive lifestyle could prove more affordable than a conventional life on land.

The company's first ship, the Odyssey, embarked on a continuous global voyage in October 2024, after some delays in Belfast. It is currently following a planned 15-year itinerary that involves circumnavigating the globe multiple times, with each full journey taking approximately three and a half years.

Pricing That Rivals London's Property Market

For those seeking a permanent maritime home, Villa Vie is offering oceanview rooms from $539,999 (around £404,000). For more space and a private balcony, suites start at $899,999 (roughly £637,000). Owners will also pay monthly fees for the all-inclusive service.

This presents a striking contrast to the UK property market. The average price for a flat in London typically falls between £530,000 and £610,000, making the ship's entry-level cabins a potentially cheaper alternative. The company also provides more flexible options, including five-year ownership plans and rentals for those not ready to commit to a lifetime at sea.

Owners are not obliged to reside on board permanently. They can rent out their cabins when unused or pay to invite guests aboard for a visit.

An All-Inclusive, Connected Lifestyle

While specific details of the new Lumina ship remain under wraps, Villa Vie promises an 'ultra-luxury' experience. Based on the existing Odyssey, amenities are expected to mirror those of high-end cruise liners, tailored for long-term living.

Residents can expect gourmet dining, entertainment, swimming pools, and optional shore excursions. Practical services include regular housekeeping, a fortnightly laundry service, and inclusive medical visits. A social club and organised events aim to foster community and prevent isolation during the extended voyage.

Although the concept appeals strongly to retirees, Villa Vie is also targeting remote workers and digital nomads. The Odyssey features a business centre and relies on Starlink high-speed WiFi, enabling reliable video calls and online work from anywhere on the planet.

In a statement, the company's newly-appointed President, Chris Cox, expressed his enthusiasm: "I'm thrilled to join Villa Vie at such a defining moment... There is incredible demand for authentic, residential oceangoing lifestyles... Project Lumina will be about listening carefully to that demand and translating it into beautifully designed, high-value products."

With Project Lumina, the dream of selling up and sailing off into the sunset is becoming a concrete, and for some, a surprisingly affordable, life choice.
