The National Museum in Cardiff is considering temporary closure to carry out repairs and redevelopment, but Amgueddfa Cymru - Museum Wales has stressed that no decision has been made. Speculation on social media suggested the museum would close for four to five years from 2027, but the museum says any potential closure would be subject to a full review and consultation.
Ongoing Maintenance Challenges
A spokesperson for Amgueddfa Cymru - Museum Wales said: "Maintaining a historic building of the age, scale and complexity of National Museum Cardiff is an ongoing challenge." The museum is approaching its centenary next year, prompting discussions about improvement and redevelopment to preserve the building and enhance visitor experience. The spokesperson added: "These exciting milestone plans are at an early stage and subject to several stages of business cases and planning frameworks - as such, no decisions have been made yet."
Previous Closure in 2025
In early 2025, the museum was suddenly closed for a week due to health and safety concerns. The closure was caused by a mechanical issue from a component failure in an isolated area of the building. The decision was taken to safeguard visitors, staff, and collections, with the team working diligently to make necessary repairs.
Future Plans and Consultation
Any planned decision to temporarily close the museum will be subject to a full review and consultation with staff, volunteers, visitors, and the wider community, confirmed by its Board of Trustees. A design team has been appointed to carry out enabling works for maintenance and explore concept options for the future. A Welsh Government spokesperson said: "We are aware of claims on social media regarding the museum. The museum has made clear no decisions have been taken on the potential options for refurbishment, and any decision on options will be subject to a number of factors including a full consultation."
