Manchester United provided a significant update on their plans for a new stadium on Thursday, confirming the venue will be built 350 metres from the current Old Trafford on land recently acquired from Indurent. The 100,000-seater stadium, part of the Trafford Wharfside development, will allow the club to continue playing at Old Trafford during construction.
Uncertain Future for Old Trafford
The fate of the historic Theatre of Dreams remains unclear. Collette Roche, Chief Executive of the stadium development, admitted: "We just don't know, and that is the genuine answer. The focus at the moment for me personally is around getting the new stadium built, making sure that the facilities around are in place, the transport networks are in. And then I think everything else is phased."
Roche added: "Then at that point we'll think, what should we do with this? Should we keep it? Should we knock it down? Should we redevelop it into something different? Should it become houses? I don't know."
Debt Concerns Addressed
United currently carry debt of £1.3 billion. The new stadium was initially budgeted at £2 billion, but Roche could not confirm whether that figure remains accurate. She urged fans not to become "over-obsessed" with debt, asserting that the new ground will eventually pay for itself through increased revenue.
Transfer Boost Expected
Roche suggested that the enhanced revenue from the new stadium could benefit the football budget, including transfers. "The revenue that's going to be generated, where does that go? That'll go back into the club, that goes back into the team, that goes back into growing our football," she said.
Practical Decision on Location
Roche insisted that building away from the current Old Trafford footprint was a practical solution, allowing a seamless transition from the old ground to the new venue without disrupting matches.
