Lisandro Martinez wants to leave Man Utd after rant

Lisandro Martinez is looking to leave Manchester United this summer when his contract expires despite apologising for Tuesday night's rant.

The Argentine let rip in the aftermath of the loss to Atletico Madrid, which continued United's poor form, and in particular took aim at club chief Jason Wilcox for failing to back the team in the transfer market.

He's since had meetings in Carrington to discuss his remarks and has put out a statement apologising, but with his deal up at the end of the season there remains the likelihood that he will leave Old Trafford. Martinez was linked with a move to Atletico in the summer.

Frustration over Ayden Heaven selection

The 28-year-old's frustration peaked this week when he saw Ayden Heaven named at left-back during the loss in the Spanish capital, despite the former Arsenal youngster naturally being a centre-half.

Martinez saw that as further proof that the squad is not well equipped enough, with a 20-year-old inexperienced defender, who is yet to play 30 games for United, being asked to fill in for a player in Luke Shaw who is known to be injury prone.

Michael Carrick has a lack of cover in that position and adding a left-back was on his summer wishlist, but no-one arrived. There was interest in Newcastle's Lewis Hall, but they were never able to pursue the deal because senior figures ruled that the finances weren't available, reports The Sun.

Martinez's post-match comments

United's defensive line has not had any major reinforcements for years and Martinez said in his post-match rant: "We had a fantastic season last season, and now we expect more from the top, from upstairs, to bring in more players to compete because many teams have brought in many players as well.

"I expect more from our technical director. I have to be honest. And also, as a player, we have to do more. It's also important to build a strong squad to be ready for this kind of night."

United's upturn in results last season came after the New Year, but it was caveated by the fact they had no European football and were knocked out of both cup competitions.

The Argentine has been at the Manchester outfit since 2022, when he followed Erik ten Hag from Ajax, but been hampered by injuries during his period in the Premier League. Whilst playing at Old Trafford Martinez did win the World Cup, but has found it difficult to replicate the form he showed during that tournament.
