A sprawling $3 million mansion in Massachusetts is on the market for free, but the lucky buyer will have to move the house themselves off the coveted property. The classic paneled home on Nantucket, nicknamed Billionaires' Island, is located at 140 Surfside Road and is a part of the island's Demolition Delay Bylaw program. The bylaw was expanded in 2024 to encourage the relocation of homes rather than their demolition.
Tradition of Relocation
Shelley Lockwood, a local real estate agent, told Realtor.com that Nantucket's tradition of relocating older homes helps prevent them from filling landfills. Prospective buyers must be prepared to move the home to a new location within 180 days of the sale. Lockwood noted that the practice is quite common, with buyers often purchasing a property on the iconic vacation island for the land rather than the house.
Property Details
The Surfside listing was purchased last December by Dean Lampe for $3 million. He is now seeking to get rid of the home for free, but will still own the land. Lampe has participated in multiple real estate dealings on the island. The Nantucket Current reported last April that Lampe sold a sprawling $5.4 million mansion on 13 Aurora Way, which is about a 10-minute drive from the property on Surfside. Additionally, Realtor.com reported that Lampe purchased a seven-bedroom house next door for $8 million in 2023.
140 Surfside is a three-bedroom, two-bathroom home spanning over 1,736 square feet, built in 1994. The property features a sprawling elevated front deck and a second rooftop deck, creating stunning views wherever the home ends up.
Island's High Costs
The proposal to move the home may seem unusual, but it has become a tradition on the island as it grapples with high costs. Nantucket has a median home price of over $3 million, which is 142 percent higher than the national average, according to Zillow. Since the island began implementing the Demolition Delay Bylaw program, permit requests to relocate homes have skyrocketed. There were 163 relocations to Nantucket in 2022 and 2023, according to Blue Dot Living. House transfers must be made between September 15 and June 15, before the crowded summer season.
