Couple Finds $100,000 in Safe While Magnet Fishing in New York

A New York couple magnet fishing in a lake in Queens made an extraordinary discovery when they pulled up a safe containing $100,000 in cash. James Kane and Barbie Agostini were using a strong magnet attached to a rope in Flushing Meadows Corona Park on 31 May when they retrieved the safe.

Upon opening the safe, they found bundles of $100 bills, estimated to be worth $100,000, though the money was water-damaged. Kane told NY1 that they started magnet fishing during the pandemic for the thrill of treasure hunting without high costs.

The couple contacted the New York Police Department, who informed them there was no crime associated with the cash and no way to identify the original owner, allowing them to keep the money. Previous finds by the couple include old guns, Second World War grenades, a motorcycle, foreign coins, and jewellery.
