Antonelli Wins Again As Russell Retires In Canada

George Russell's world championship hopes suffered a major blow at the Canadian Grand Prix as his Mercedes ground to a halt on track, handing teammate Kimi Antonelli a record-breaking victory. The British driver was left angry and disconsolate after an engine failure ended his race on lap 30 while leading a thrilling battle with the Italian.

Russell had claimed victory in the sprint race and pole position for the main event, engaging in a gripping, toe-to-toe fight with Antonelli for the first 29 laps. The pair traded the lead repeatedly, circulating within half a second of each other in an exemplary display of racing. However, Russell's race ended abruptly when he slowed and pulled off, hurling his headrest from the car in disgust.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff consoled Russell after the race, as the Briton admitted he was lost for words. 'I'm proud of my weekend: pole for the sprint race, won the sprint race, pole for the main race, I had a good battle with Kimi. From my side I don't think there was any more I could do,' Russell said.

Antonelli, now 43 points clear of Russell in the championship, expressed that he would have preferred to win in a real scrap. The victory was his fourth in a row, making him the first driver to score his first four wins in succession. However, the intense rivalry between the teammates led to warnings from Mercedes to 'tidy up the racing' after several close encounters, including contact in the final chicane.
