Historic UK Fish and Chip Equipment Maker Henry Nuttall Rescued from Administration
A prominent UK manufacturer specialising in equipment for fish and chip shops, with a heritage spanning over 160 years, has been successfully rescued from administration following a last-minute acquisition deal. The rescue ensures the preservation of all employee positions and secures the future of this venerable British brand.
Centuries-Old Business Faces Financial Crisis
Henry Nuttall, founded in 1865 and renowned as the self-proclaimed 'original frying range manufacturer in the world', encountered severe financial difficulties leading to its entry into administration at the beginning of February. The company's troubles escalated following the death of its owner in March 2024, compounded by mounting cost pressures and a noticeable decline in product demand across the market.
Richard Oddy and Jonathan Mark Amor of Azets Holdings Limited were appointed as joint administrators on February 6 to oversee the critical process. Mr Oddy explained the precarious situation, stating that despite an extensive sale effort, no buyer could be found willing to purchase the company on a solvent basis. With creditor pressure intensifying, urgent action was required to salvage a brand that has supplied frying ranges to fish and chip shops throughout Great Britain for more than a century and a half.
Rescue Acquisition Secures Jobs and Future
The company's future has now been assured through its acquisition for an undisclosed sum by HN Ranges, operating under the RGM Leeds group. This entity, which also owns Hopkins—another major British range manufacturer—stepped in to acquire Henry Nuttall's business and assets. Crucially, all 11 jobs have been transferred to the new owner, safeguarding employment and providing a significantly better return for creditors compared to a complete shutdown.
Mr Oddy emphasised the strategic importance of the rescue, noting that Henry Nuttall is one of only two primary UK manufacturers of frying ranges, the other being Hopkins. The acquisition not only preserves a proud industrial legacy but also strengthens the sector's manufacturing capabilities.
Historical Legacy and Modern Operations
Henry Nuttall began its operations from a modest backstreet shop in Rochdale, gradually expanding post-war as new chip shops across the region adopted Nuttall's ranges. In the late 1930s, the business relocated to Castle Works on Holmes Street in Rochdale, where it continued to thrive. Today, the company operates a manufacturing facility in Dinnington, Sheffield, maintaining its commitment to quality and tradition.
A spokesperson for RGM Leeds expressed optimism about the acquisition, confirming that Henry Nuttall will now operate as part of their group alongside Hopkins. This move is seen as a positive step that fortifies the long-term viability of the business while allowing it to continue as an independent brand trusted by its customer base.
The spokesperson assured customers that day-to-day operations will proceed as normal, with the same personnel, products, values, and service commitment remaining intact. The added advantage of long-term investment and support behind the scenes is expected to enhance the company's resilience and growth prospects. The group expressed gratitude for the ongoing support from loyal customers, partners, and the wider community, looking forward to a promising future under the new ownership structure.
