A devastating explosion at a fireworks factory in China's Hunan province has resulted in at least 21 fatalities and 61 injuries, according to state media reports on Tuesday. The blast prompted Chinese President Xi Jinping to demand a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
Details of the Explosion
The explosion occurred at the Huasheng Fireworks Manufacturing and Display Company in Liuyang, a city under the administration of Changsha, the provincial capital. Liuyang is a well-known hub for fireworks manufacturing. The blast took place at approximately 4:40 PM local time (0840 GMT) on Monday, as reported by state broadcasters CCTV and Xinhua.
Social media footage captured massive plumes of smoke rising into clear blue skies against a backdrop of lush green mountains. Reuters verified the location of the footage as Changsha, posted on social media on May 4.
Emergency Response
Authorities deployed nearly 500 rescuers to the scene, and residents were evacuated from danger zones due to the risk posed by two black powder warehouses within the factory compound. Emergency workers utilized three robots to assist in the search and rescue operations. A 1-kilometer rescue area and a 3-kilometer control zone were established to manage the situation.
Investigation and Accountability
The cause of the explosion is under investigation, and authorities have taken control measures against those responsible for the company, according to state media. The person in charge of the company has been detained, as reported by state-run China Daily. President Xi Jinping called for a speedy investigation to determine the cause and strict accountability for the incident. He also instructed authorities to strengthen risk screening and hazard control in key industries to enhance public safety and protect lives and property.
Context and Recent Incidents
Xi frequently issues important instructions to local officials after major accidents and disasters resulting in fatalities. Last week, he urged a nationwide upgrade in China's disaster response capacity. In February, China reported two deadly explosions at fireworks shops around the Lunar New Year period.
According to data from the Observatory of Economic Complexity, China exported $1.14 billion worth of fireworks last year, accounting for more than two-thirds of global sales.
