Virgin Media slashes 1Gb broadband to record low 87p per day
Virgin Media cuts 1Gb broadband to 87p per day

Virgin Media has launched a new broadband sale, cutting the price of its fastest Gig1 Fibre Broadband to a record low of £26.99 per month, equivalent to roughly 87p per day. This represents a saving of £72 over the 24-month contract compared to the previous price of £29.99 per month.

How the deal compares with rivals

The Gig1 plan offers speeds of up to 1,130Mbps, allowing users to download a full HD film in under 30 seconds or a 50GB PlayStation 5 game in less than seven minutes. By contrast, a 70Mbps connection would take over 90 minutes for the same game. Virgin Media says this is the 'lowest ever price' for its top-tier broadband.

Competitors offer slower or more expensive alternatives. Plusnet's Full Fibre 900 plan provides 900Mbps at £31.99 per month, while EE's 1.6Gbps Premium Broadband costs £45.99 per month. However, Plusnet includes a £100 reward card for new customers and uses BT's Openreach network, which may offer wider availability.

Price rises and eligibility

One downside is that Virgin has announced annual price increases for Gig1 customers. The £26.99 rate will rise to £30.99 from April 2027 and to £34.99 from April 2028. Available speeds also vary by location, so prospective customers should use Virgin's postcode checker to confirm eligibility for Gig1 speeds.

Alternative providers and speed needs

Other so-called alt-nets are emerging across the UK, often undercutting major brands. For example, Community Fibre offers 1Gbps for £25 per month with the first three months free and no price increases during the contract, but it is limited to London and select southeast locations.

Experts advise assessing actual speed requirements before signing a long-term contract. A couple streaming Netflix nightly may manage with 100Mbps, while larger households with home working, gaming, and streaming should consider at least 300Mbps. Virgin's Gig1 is essentially a 'motorway' connection, ideal for heavy usage.
