A man who faked his own death in a kayaking accident has confessed to the insurance scam that shocked Britain. John Darwin, now 71, admitted to disappearing off the coast of Hartlepool in 2002, leaving his wife Anne to claim life insurance payouts totalling hundreds of thousands of pounds.
The plot involved Darwin hiding in a secret room in his own home while his sons mourned his apparent drowning. After seven years, the couple moved to Panama, but their scheme unravelled when a photograph of them together was discovered online. Both were jailed in 2008 for fraud.
Screenwriter Chris Lang has turned the bizarre case into an ITV drama, The Thief, His Wife and the Canoe. Lang said he was surprised by how much of the story he had forgotten, including the details of how the plan was executed and why they decided to return to the UK.
Actress Monica Dolan, who plays Anne Darwin, said the couple's treatment of their children was the most disturbing aspect. 'The unpleasant way Anne Darwin pretended to her children that their father was dead is what attracted me to the role,' she said. Anne received a longer sentence than John, which Dolan attributes to society's harsher judgment of maternal betrayal.
The drama also explores whether Anne was a victim of coercive control. At the time of the trial, the legal definition of coercion required the abuser to be physically present during each offence, meaning psychological manipulation from abroad did not count. Dolan noted that the Darwins' financial situation—owing £700,000 after being given loans to buy multiple properties—reflected a broader culture of reckless lending by banks.
