The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) Winter Fuel Payment provides between £100 and £300 to help households with heating costs during the colder months. Payments are issued automatically in November and December, with recipients receiving a letter in advance and funds transferred directly into the bank account used for their regular benefit payments.
The amount awarded depends on individual circumstances, including date of birth and situation during the Qualifying Week, which runs from September 21 to 27, 2026. Those who live in a care home can still receive the payment.
Who is eligible for the Winter Fuel Payment?
To qualify, you must have been born on or before June 27, 1960. The sum you receive is determined by your date of birth and your circumstances during the Qualifying Week. Following this period, claimants need to wait for a letter to arrive by post.
If you already receive any of the following benefits, the payment is issued automatically and there is no need to check eligibility: State Pension, Pension Credit, Universal Credit, Attendance Allowance, Personal Independence Payment (PIP), Carer's Allowance, Disability Living Allowance (DLA), Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), awards from the War Pensions Scheme, Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit, Incapacity Benefit, and Industrial Death Benefit.
If you do not receive any of these benefits, you must make a claim if either of the following applies: you have not received the Winter Fuel Payment before, or you have deferred your State Pension since your last Winter Fuel Payment.
Who is not eligible?
You will not qualify if you usually live outside England, Wales, or Northern Ireland, or if you were visiting these countries during the Qualifying Week but usually live elsewhere. You are also ineligible if you were in hospital receiving free treatment for the whole of the week of September 21 to 27, 2026, and the year before that, if you need permission to enter the UK and your granted leave says you cannot claim public funds, or if you were in prison for the whole of the Qualifying Week.
Payment dates and repayment rules
The majority of payments are issued automatically in November or December. A letter will inform you of the amount you will receive and the bank account it will be paid into, typically the same account used for your State Pension or other benefits. If you do not receive a letter or the money has not been deposited by January 27, 2027, contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre.
Should your total income exceed £35,000, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) will reclaim the payment. Your partner's income is not taken into account when calculating your total income. You can verify whether your income surpasses the threshold by supplying the full amount of income you anticipate receiving in the tax year prior to any deductions. HMRC will ordinarily recover the amount owed through your tax code, or through your tax bill if you submit a Self Assessment tax return.
