Which? Survey: Many Prefer Dentist Visits Over Retirement Planning
Survey: Many Prefer Dentist Over Retirement Planning

Survey Reveals Retirement Planning Avoidance in the UK

A significant portion of the UK population is actively avoiding retirement planning, with many preferring mundane or even unpleasant tasks over financial preparation, according to a new survey by the consumer group Which?. The research highlights widespread anxiety and confusion surrounding pensions and long-term savings.

Dentist Visits and Deep Cleans Favoured Over Financial Planning

The survey, commissioned by Which? and conducted by Deltapoll in December, involved more than 2,000 participants across the UK. It found that one in eight people, equivalent to 13%, would rather undergo a dental appointment than spend a single hour planning for their retirement. Furthermore, a quarter of respondents (27%) stated they would prefer to conduct a thorough deep clean of their bathroom, and 7% would opt to sit an exam rather than engage with retirement planning.

These preferences underscore a deep-seated reluctance to address financial futures, often driven by emotional and practical barriers.

Stress and Confusion as Major Hurdles

The data reveals that nearly half of those surveyed face significant obstacles when considering retirement. More than two-fifths (44%) admitted to postponing thoughts about their retirement provision because it feels too stressful, while almost half (46%) reported finding the financial jargon associated with retirement planning confusing and overwhelming.

Jenny Ross, the Money Editor at Which?, commented on the findings, stating, "Our research has shown that millions of people across the country feel unprepared for retirement, and are often too stressed or overwhelmed to sit down and take stock of their pension savings."

Confidence and Knowledge Gaps in Savings

Among individuals who are not yet retired, the survey uncovered concerning gaps in confidence and knowledge. Half (50%) do not feel confident that they are saving adequately for retirement, and a similar proportion (48%) are unsure how much money is required to achieve a comfortable retirement lifestyle.

To assist with these uncertainties, Pensions UK has published detailed calculations for retirement living standards, offering benchmarks to help people better understand their potential financial needs in later life.

Expanding Access to Free Retirement Advice

In response to these challenges, Which? is taking proactive steps to support consumers. The organisation is expanding its free advice services and has partnered with Just Group to provide access to Destination Retirement, a specialised retirement planning platform. This tool is designed to guide individuals through the complexities of post-work life choices, offering clarity and practical assistance.

The initiative aims to demystify retirement planning, reduce stress, and empower people to make informed decisions about their financial futures, addressing the core issues highlighted in the survey.
