State pensioners across the UK can receive up to £538 in payments this winter to help with living costs, according to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and Social Security Scotland.
The payments come from several winter schemes, including the Winter Fuel Payment, the Warm Home Discount Scheme, Cold Weather Payments, and a Christmas Bonus. Pensioners eligible for all four DWP schemes could receive £485, or potentially more if Cold Weather Payments are triggered multiple times. Eligibility depends on age, individual circumstances, and location.
Payments in Scotland
In Scotland, the Winter Fuel Payment and Cold Weather Payments have been replaced by new benefits under the Scottish Government's social security system. These include a Pension Age Winter Heating Payment of up to £316.70 and a Winter Heating Payment worth £62. Pensioners eligible for both, plus the Warm Home Discount and Christmas Bonus, could receive up to £538.70.
Winter Fuel Payment: Up to £300
State pensioners born on or before June 27, 1960, living in England, Wales, or Northern Ireland can get a Winter Fuel Payment from the DWP. The payment ranges from £100 to £300, depending on age and circumstances during the qualifying week between September 21 and 27, 2026.
Those living alone and born between September 28, 1946, and June 27, 1960, will get £200, while those born before September 28, 1946, will get £300. If you live with someone else eligible, your payment may range between £100 and £300. Most eligible pensioners will receive the payment automatically, with letters sent in October and November confirming amounts, and payments issued in November and December.
Pension Age Winter Heating Payment: £316.70
Pensioners in Scotland born on or before June 27, 1960, receive a Pension Age Winter Heating Payment instead of the Winter Fuel Payment. Single pensioners born between September 28, 1946, and June 27, 1960, can expect £211.15, while those born before September 28, 1946, can get the maximum £316.70. Payments are usually issued automatically, with letters sent from November and payments starting from November through winter.
Warm Home Discount and Cold Weather Payments
The Warm Home Discount Scheme provides a £150 discount off electricity bills, reopening in October. In England and Wales, state pensioners receiving Pension Credit are eligible, as well as households on Universal Credit, Housing Benefit, or income-related Employment and Support Allowance. In Scotland, the discount is applied automatically if you or your partner get Pension Credit. Letters confirming the discount are being sent from this week through to January 2027, and electricity suppliers will apply the discount by March 31, 2027.
Cold Weather Payments of £25 are triggered when temperatures drop to 0C or below for seven consecutive days. These payments are available to those claiming Pension Credit, with each seven-day period of very cold weather between November 1, 2026, and March 31, 2026, qualifying for a payment, issued automatically.
