Shot Nottingham PC stable after surgeries; suspect in court

A police officer shot in Nottingham city centre remains in hospital in a stable condition after undergoing several surgeries, police have said.

New details of the incident emerged on Thursday as Aisha Zaman, 27, appeared before Nottingham Magistrates' Court charged with two firearms offences. The court heard that PC Lee Lane was approaching two people at a bus stop on Angel Row at around 4.50am on Sunday when a firearm was discharged.

Court hears how weapon discharged

Prosecutor Mairin Long told magistrates the weapon fell to the ground and discharged after the officer arrived at the scene. Photographs taken afterwards appeared to show a sawn-off double-barrelled shotgun lying in the street, The Mirror reports.

Zaman, of Collison Street in the Hyson Green area of Nottingham, has been charged with possession of a prohibited firearm, namely an adapted shotgun, and possession of that firearm with intent to commit an indictable offence. PC Lane remains in hospital in a stable condition.

Zaman remanded in custody

Zaman confirmed her name, date of birth and address in court on Friday (October 23), as her parents and younger sister sat in the public gallery. Mrs Simpson, the chair of the magistrates bench, remanded Zaman in custody.

The case has now been sent to Nottingham Crown Court, where a plea and trial management hearing will take place. Defence solicitor Omar Banares told the hearing: "Of course this incident is serious; it has made national news."

He added: "She does not face any charge in relation to the discharge of the firearm or injuring the officer. She lives at home with her father and mother who are in the public gallery along with her younger sister."

Other arrests in connection

Alongside Zaman, multiple other suspects have been held in connection with the incident, including two men, aged 24 and 30, and two women, aged 25 and 21, all arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

A 35-year-old man and a 33-year-old woman were also arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life and assisting an offender and remain in police custody, the force said on Thursday evening.
