State pensioners born before 1946 get £300 Winter Fuel Payment
Pensioners born before 1946 get £300 winter fuel boost

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed that state pensioners born before September 28, 1946, will receive an automatic £300 Winter Fuel Payment for winter 2026 to 2027, a £100 increase over the standard £200 payment.

The payment amount is determined by the recipient's date of birth and their circumstances during the 'qualifying week' of September 21 to 27, 2026. Those aged under 80, born between September 28, 1946, and June 27, 1960, will receive £200, while those aged 80 and over will get £300.

Eligibility and payment details

The DWP states that eligibility is based on when you were born and your circumstances between September 21 and 27, 2026. Payments are either £200 for those born between September 28, 1946, and June 27, 1960, or £300 for those born before September 28, 1946.

The Government explains: "You'll get a letter in October or November telling you how much Winter Fuel Payment you'll get, if you're eligible. If you do not get a letter but think you're eligible, check if you need to make a claim."

How payments are made

Most people who qualify will receive a letter detailing the amount and the bank account into which it will be paid, usually the same account used for Pension Credit or other benefits. Age UK notes that if you or your partner claims Pension Credit, Income Support, income-based Jobseeker's Allowance, or income-related Employment and Support Allowance, the payment should go to the main claimant automatically.

Age UK adds that those who have never received a winter fuel payment before, or who claim Universal Credit, might need to make a claim. Those receiving Child Tax Credit or Working Tax Credit must also make a claim. Payments are expected between mid-November and Christmas, with a helpline available at 0800 731 0160 for enquiries.
