Jamie Carragher believes Michael Carrick is desperate to leave Manchester United after the team's 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth, describing the dressing room as rancid and suggesting the manager wants to be put out of his misery.
United went into the match without a win in seven games and fell behind seven minutes before the break when Rayan scored. Marcus Tavernier added a second five minutes later, and a mistake by Senne Lammens allowed Evanilson to seal the victory in the 71st minute.
Fernandes left on the bench
Carrick chose to leave captain Bruno Fernandes on the bench for the entire match. Fernandes had publicly criticised his manager during the week, questioning tactical decisions after a 4-1 Champions League loss to Como.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Carragher said: "He doesn't want to be sitting in the dugout again for Manchester United with those players. He doesn't."
Carragher's verdict
Carragher added: "What we're watching now is a situation where it becomes untenable for everybody... Can you imagine going into the training ground tomorrow and facing Bruno Fernandes after not bringing him on in that situation? It's a rancid dressing room. He doesn't want to be involved in that. He wants to be put out of his misery tonight."
On Fernandes, Carragher said: "I don't think he was ever going to bring him on. It was a deliberate decision to leave him on the bench to try and almost embarrass him."
Carrick's response
After the match, Carrick said: "It's really difficult to have a day like this at this football club and feel the emotion and dynamics of what it was like today. Not for me personally, but for Manchester United. It was really mixed. I feel responsible for the position I'm in. I've been at the club a long time."
He continued: "It hurts a lot going through this. It was a strange mix of emotions at the end of the game. It wasn't a nice way to end the game. It was a tough day for the players. We went into the game having been rocked. You can feel that. They're really hurting and disappointed in there. It's not a nice feeling. You have to accept it, we're in that situation."
