Channel 4 soap Hollyoaks has been censured by broadcasting watchdog Ofcom for a fight scene in which one of the main characters was killed by a speeding train. The scene, aired on 19 March 2013, was deemed unsuitable for broadcast before the 9pm watershed due to its violent and shocking nature.
The sequence depicted the culmination of a year-long revenge storyline between former undercover policeman Simon Walker and former drug dealer Brendan Brady, ending with Walker being pushed into the path of a train. Channel 4 argued that viewers expected a dramatic end to the tense relationship and that measures were taken to ensure compliance with TV rules, including editing punches, monitoring sound levels, and providing a pre-show announcement.
Despite these precautions, Ofcom highlighted that 10% of the episode's audience were children aged four to nine, based on official Barb figures. The watchdog concluded the scene had the potential to distress younger viewers and raise concerns among parents, regardless of editorial context or signposting.
Channel 4 defended the scheduling, noting that only one complaint was received and that the content was appropriate for Hollyoaks' teen audience. However, Ofcom ruled the material breached broadcasting codes and has commissioned research into viewers' attitudes to television violence, with results due in 2014.
