Arsenal's £55m Bruno Guimaraes Bid Rejected, Second Offer Expected
Arsenal's £55m Bruno Guimaraes Bid Rejected

Arsenal have seen a £55 million bid for Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes rejected, with the Magpies insisting the Brazilian is not for sale. A second offer from the Gunners is expected to arrive, but Newcastle manager Eddie Howe is desperate to retain his skipper amid growing uncertainty around the squad.

Guimaraes: Heartbeat of Newcastle

Guimaraes, 28, has become the heartbeat of Eddie Howe's Newcastle side in recent years, driving the team forward with forceful displays and infectious enthusiasm. The Brazilian, who is currently lighting up the World Cup and contributed two assists against Scotland, has long been admired by Arsenal. The Gunners had weighed up a bid for him before he joined Newcastle from Lyon four-and-a-half years ago.

Arsenal have now held talks with the player's representatives this summer and made the £55 million offer, which Newcastle rejected outright. The club has told Arsenal and any other suitors that Guimaraes is not for sale.

Contract Situation and Player's Stance

Guimaraes has two years left on his contract, and Newcastle would like him to extend it. There is no suggestion that Guimaraes has asked for a move, and he has often spoken about how happy he is at Newcastle and his desire to become a club 'idol'. United are determined to keep him and will continue talks over a contract extension.

Former Newcastle winger Chris Waddle said he wouldn't be surprised if the 28-year-old looked to leave Tyneside this summer, but advised the club to hold firm unless they receive the right fee. "It seems like they’ve been building a team, and all of a sudden, you have [Sandro] Tonali potentially leaving, Gordon gone, [Bruno] Guimaraes supposedly on his way out, and Lewis Hall," Waddle said. "People often forget that Newcastle aren't under any obligation to sell. If a player wants to leave, that’s a different matter, but unless a player explicitly asks for a transfer, there's no reason for the club to sell. I think Bruno Guimaraes will hopefully have a good World Cup, but I wouldn't be surprised if he's looking to move on."

Impact on Newcastle's Summer Plans

The reports of Arsenal's interest have thrown more shade on Newcastle's transfer plans this summer. With key players potentially departing, Howe faces a challenging task to maintain squad stability. However, the club's firm stance on Guimaraes signals their intent to retain their star players and continue building under the current project.
