Rolls-Royce Signs Landmark £600m Deal for UK's First Mini Nuclear Reactors
In a major boost for Britain's energy security, government-owned Great British Energy – Nuclear (GBEN) has signed a historic contract with Rolls-Royce SMR to develop the UK's first mini nuclear reactors. The agreement, valued at £600 million, initiates work on three Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), which are projected to generate sufficient low-carbon electricity to power approximately three million homes.
Investment and Job Creation
The National Wealth Fund is set to invest up to £599 million to support Rolls-Royce SMR during the critical design phase of this pioneering project. Ministers have hailed this as Europe's first formal contract for SMRs, anticipating it will create thousands of jobs across the country while bolstering the UK's transition to clean power and enhancing energy independence.
Strategic Locations and Global Ambitions
The first SMR power station is planned for Wylfa in North Wales, marking a significant step in regional energy development. This initiative forms part of a wider £2.6 billion government programme aimed at accelerating nuclear innovation and infrastructure. Additionally, Rolls-Royce SMR holds commitments to supply its advanced SMR technology to Czechia, showcasing the UK's growing influence in the global nuclear energy market.
This deal represents a crucial milestone in the UK's efforts to diversify its energy mix, reduce carbon emissions, and secure a sustainable power future for generations to come.
