Manchester United have been given an update on Sandro Tonali, as a move for Ederson nears completion. The club's priority under new head coach Michael Carrick this summer is to address the midfield department, especially with Casemiro officially leaving at the end of the month.
United Drop Out of Tonali Race
United had been tipped for a three-way battle with Arsenal and Manchester City for the signing of Tonali, but reports earlier in the week indicated they had dropped out of the race. According to the Mirror, Man Utd informed Newcastle they would not pursue a deal for the Italy international, citing the combined cost of transfer fee and wage demands as too high.
In a fresh twist, Tottenham have since registered their interest in Tonali as Roberto De Zerbi pushes to overhaul a squad that flirted dangerously close to relegation this season. However, Sky Sports reports that Spurs' bid of around £80million has been rejected by Newcastle, suggesting Man United's decision to walk away was correct. Any deal for Tonali will not be cheap, with La Gazzetta dello Sport previously reporting that Newcastle have set an asking price of €115m (£100m) for the 26-year-old.
Ederson Transfer 'Almost Sorted'
Man United are set to announce the signing of Ederson after striking a deal with Atalanta earlier this month for a fee in the region of £35m. Speaking to Tuttosport after Brazil's 3-0 win over Haiti at the World Cup, the midfielder provided an update on the transfer. He said: "It's practically almost all sorted. I have to make the most of this moment. I am here and it is a wonderful thing, something you must always live to the fullest."
Impact on United's Midfield Plans
With Casemiro's departure confirmed, Carrick is reshaping the midfield. The signing of Ederson for £35m represents a more cost-effective option compared to Tonali, whose £100m price tag proved prohibitive. United's focus now shifts to integrating Ederson, while monitoring developments with Tonali from the sidelines.
