Man Cuts Energy Costs by Heating Home with Lidl Doughnuts

Marek Hoffmann, a man from Poland, has found an unconventional way to slash his energy bills: by using Lidl doughnuts as fuel in his log burner. Fed up with paying high costs to keep his home warm, he swapped wood for the sweet treats in a cost-saving experiment that proved surprisingly effective.

The Theory Behind the Doughnut Heating Method

Marek calculated that one Lidl doughnut, containing 440 calories, costs around 2p. In scientific terms, a calorie measures the heat needed to raise the temperature of one millilitre of water by one degree Celsius, indicating how well something burns. His theory was that 133 doughnuts would equal 10kg of material with a calorific value of 18.5 MJ/kg—identical to wood.

"I was just curious if it made any sense," said Marek. "Doughnuts are insanely cheap, and everybody eats them." He noted that the food is cheaper than wood, making it a potential alternative for heating.

Successful Test Results and Cost Savings

The test worked: Marek heated his home for £2.49 worth of doughnuts, compared to £3.94 for wood. After creating an air gap in his stove, the snack-powered heating kicked in, raising the temperature from 14°C to 22°C in just five hours.

This discovery came after Marek grew tired of paying huge bills to keep his place warm. He had been spending over the odds to fill his log burner with wood, prompting him to explore this sweeter, more economical option.

Public Reaction to the Unusual Heating Stunt

The unusual method sparked humorous reactions online. One commenter said, "Nothing is better than some burned sugar and oil on the chimney wall." Another added, "Fuel depots hate him," while a third remarked, "This idea is so absurd that I burst out laughing just by seeing the title." A further comment noted, "These doughnuts are perfect for just that."

Marek's experiment highlights creative approaches to reducing energy costs, though it's more of a stunt than a practical long-term solution. It underscores the ongoing struggle many face with high heating bills and the lengths some will go to save money.
