A major explosion at an auto supply plant in Louisiana has forced evacuations of residents within a one-mile radius, as a massive fire continues to burn. The blast occurred at Smitty's Supply, just north of Roseland, on Friday evening, prompting authorities to order immediate evacuations.
The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office stated on social media that there is no timeline for lifting the evacuation order, as the fire remains active. Video footage from local outlet WBRZ showed bright orange flames and a thick black plume of smoke rising from the facility, which produces oils and auto fluids.
More than 35 agencies, including the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality and the Environmental Protection Agency, have responded to the scene. A nearby highway intersection has been closed. The LDEQ is conducting air monitoring and reported that all readings are currently zero, with the EPA providing additional support.
Roseland Montessori School was also evacuated, with all students and staff safely transported to a reunification site. Superintendent Melissa Martin Stilley confirmed that everyone has been accounted for and returned home safely. Tangipahoa Parish President Robby Miller described it as a “godsend” that no injuries have been reported so far.
Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry said he is monitoring the situation closely and urged prayers for everyone's safety. Residents are advised to follow evacuation orders and other safety instructions from local officials.
