Jackdaw gas field approval vital step to sustainable future

The Labour government's approval of the Jackdaw gas field 150 miles off Aberdeen is a sensible move which benefits us all. In greenlighting a project initially licensed in 2022, Prime Minister Andy Burnham has shown that he understands where most voters are at.

A realistic transition from fossil fuels

A realistic transition from fossil fuels to renewables is the long-term aim – but it has to be a change that protects workers, secures energy independence and keeps Scotland's economy moving. For generations, the energy sector has been the lifeblood of the north-east.

Jackdaw is expected to unlock billions of pounds in direct investment, safeguarding highly skilled energy sector jobs and giving a shot in the arm to local supply chains across Scotland. Abandoning our own domestic oil and gas industry does nothing to help the planet. All that would do is export Scottish jobs and import foreign gas with a far higher carbon footprint.

Gas remains a critical fuel

Some environmental groups argue that any domestic extraction undermines net-zero target. But this ignores energy reality. Gas remains a critical fuel for heating homes and feeding industrial manufacturing.

The choice is not between natural gas and zero gas. The choice is where that gas originates. Producing energy in British waters adheres to strict environmental standards and generates UK tax receipts. Whereas relying on imported liquefied natural gas from abroad creates higher transport emissions and leaves national energy security at the mercy of volatile global markets.

Skills for a green future

Maintaining our skilled offshore workforce is also vital – not just for jobs but also for our green future. Those currently working on North Sea gas infrastructure possess the exact skillsets required to build floating offshore wind farms, carbon capture systems and hydrogen networks.

By prioritising economic stability, high-value employment and energy resilience, Burnham has taken a vital step toward a sustainable future.
