Tielemans blasts Man Utd dressing room lacking 'effort'

Youri Tielemans has blamed Manchester United's recent struggles on a combination of "tactical, technical and effort" after the club suffered a 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como.

Michael Carrick's side were outplayed by the well-coached Italians throughout the match on Wednesday night. The loss represents United's worst in Europe since 1996 and comes amid their worst start to a Premier League season for 40 years.

Tielemans on the defeat

Speaking to TNT Sports after the game, Tielemans said: "There was a lot said at half-time to try and get back into the game, which didn't happen. We conceded straight away after half-time, and then you try to do something, and we get outplayed. We got outplayed for most of the game, so it was a very disappointing night."

Asked why United were so poor, he added: "It's everything. You can be good tactically but if the effort isn't there, or the other way round, you have to be good at everything, but tonight we were poor at everything."

Apology to fans

The Belgium captain also apologised to supporters, saying: "It's the same message as we've had the last few weeks. We can be here and talk about it, but we have to show it on the pitch. We can only apologise to the fans who travelled, the fans who watched us from home and support us. They're disappointed and we're disappointed. The only thing we can do is try to show something on the pitch, which we haven't done over the last few weeks."

Tielemans then suggested effort is a problem in the dressing room, saying of what has gone wrong: "It's a combination of everything: tactical, technical, effort."

Carrick takes responsibility

Carrick, speaking to TNT, said: "It was more than disappointing. I think everybody has got to take responsibility for that. I 100% take responsibility for the overall team and the performance - that's where it stops. It stops with me and I'm absolutely fine with that. I accept that totally. But as a supporter of this football club for so long, to see a performance like that is unacceptable, I have to say."
