Cut Heating Bills by 9% with Free Boiler Tweak, Say Experts
Free boiler tweak can cut heating bills by 9%

Homeowners across the UK can combat rising energy costs this winter with a simple, cost-free adjustment to their boiler that promises significant savings on gas bills.

The Secret to a More Efficient Boiler

Experts from Dwellow, a leading provider of renewable heating solutions, have revealed that most people with modern condensing combi boilers are unaware of a key efficiency setting. While these boilers are designed for peak performance at lower temperatures, they are frequently installed with a default flow temperature of 70-75°C.

Ian McLaren, co-founder of Dwellow, explains the issue: "Condensing boilers stop condensing above 70°C, which can reduce efficiency by around 10%. Simply lowering the flow temperature to the lowest comfortable level – often around 50°C – helps the boiler operate more efficiently, uses less gas, reduces running costs, and still keeps your home warm and comfortable."

Substantial Savings and Broader Advice

According to the Energy Saving Trust, this minor tweak could potentially reduce a household's heating bills by nearly 9%. The exact amount saved will depend on your boiler's initial settings and how much you are willing to adjust the temperature.

The advice extends to different heating systems:

  • Traditional boilers: Must not be set below 65°C to avoid legionella risks, but can still benefit from flow adjustments.
  • Air-source heat pumps: Perform best with a steady, low-level temperature rather than frequent on/off cycles.
  • Home insulation: Well-insulated homes suit on/off heating, while poorly insulated ones may need continuous low-level heat.

The Bigger Picture for UK Heating

This simple hack comes as the UK government pushes for wider adoption of highly efficient heat pumps, aiming for 600,000 installations per year by 2028. Compared to traditional gas boilers, heat pumps can be three times more energy-efficient.

Ian McLaren added, "Many homeowners are surprised by how much impact simple adjustments like lowering flow temperature can have. Small changes can make a real difference to bills and energy use, especially in colder months."

Further savings can be unlocked through smart thermostats and government-backed smart tariffs, which the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero says could save households roughly £100 annually.
