According to heating specialists Vaillant, the initial indication is often an error code on your boiler. For most models, this will be F28 or F29, though error codes can vary between manufacturers. If temperatures are below freezing and your boiler fails to provide heat or hot water, a frozen condensate pipe may be the cause.
Other warning signs include unusual gurgling or bubbling sounds coming from the boiler or the condensate pipe. Visually, you may notice ice formation on the pipe, particularly where it exits your home. The condensate pipe is typically a small white pipe leading from the nearest outside wall to a drain or run-off system.
A frozen condensate pipe is the most common cause of boiler breakdowns in winter. If you suspect your pipe is frozen, you can try thawing it with a warm (not boiling) water bottle or a hairdryer on a low setting, but always consult your boiler's manual or a professional if unsure.
