Coventry Airport Closes Permanently This Week

Coventry Airport Shuts Down After Nine Decades

A historic UK airport is set to close its doors for good this week, marking the end of an era after 90 years of operation. Coventry Airport will officially cease all activities on Thursday, June 11, as part of plans to transform the site into a multi-billion pound green energy facility.

The airport, which has been serving the region since 1936, saw its last flights on May 9. The Civil Aviation Authority confirmed that the airport has given formal notice of its permanent closure effective from June 11, 2026.

Redevelopment into Greenpower Park

The site will be redeveloped into Greenpower Park, a hub for vehicle battery production and recycling. Located within the West Midlands Investment Zone, a government initiative aimed at boosting manufacturing, the project is expected to attract up to £5.5 billion in private investment and create more than 30,000 jobs, according to the West Midlands Combined Authority.

A Rich History

Originally established as Baginton Aerodrome in 1936, the site served as RAF Baginton during World War II, functioning as a fighter airfield. Over the years, it accommodated freight, small aircraft, and occasional commercial flights. Notably, the airport hosted a Papal visit in 1982 when Pope John Paul II drew an estimated 350,000 people to the site.

In the 1980s, Hards Travel began operating package flights to Spain, France, and Italy from the airport. Thomsonfly later introduced jet passenger flights in 2004, but since 2008, no scheduled passenger flights have operated from the airport.

Community Reaction

Many locals have expressed mixed feelings about the closure, reflecting on the airport's historical significance and potential impacts on local businesses and the community. While some mourn the loss of a local landmark, others look forward to the economic benefits and environmental advancements the redevelopment promises.

The closure of Coventry Airport marks a significant transition from aviation history to a sustainable energy future for the region.
