Energy saving hacks can help Britons reduce their heating bills as cold weather sets in. Experts from comparison site Energy Helpline have suggested an unlikely kitchen product—cling film—could help keep draughts at bay.
According to the experts, placing cling film on windows can act as a protective layer, trapping a small pocket of air between the pane and the film. This makeshift insulation helps retain heat, particularly in homes with single glazing.
Money Saving Expert also recommends the hack, though it warns that it may not be as effective as using other materials or investing in secondary glazing. The tip is less beneficial for those with double-glazed windows or draughty windows caused by faults.
The Energy Saving Trust advises only turning on heating when you are at home to feel the benefit, as leaving it on all day can be costly. Other cost-saving measures include using draught excluders for doors, floors, and skirting boards.
Energy Helpline also suggests using sponges as makeshift draught excluders, such as placing one in the letterbox to conserve heat. While this may seem extreme, it can help keep the chill at bay.
