Aldi has announced a new partnership with renewable energy company Drax, transitioning approximately 1,200 electric vehicle (EV) chargers at more than 250 UK stores. The move, announced on 10 June, aims to provide shoppers with affordable, reliable, and convenient charging options while they shop.
New charging prices and options
Shoppers will be able to choose between two pricing tiers: 40p per kilowatt-hour (kWh) for fast charging and 62p per kWh for rapid charging. This allows customers to select the option that best suits their journey. Payments can be made via the Charge Assist app or contactless card, with no subscription required.
Store locations and expansion plans
Stores with updated charging facilities include Aldi's Diss branch in Norfolk, as well as sites in Eastbourne, Durham, and Yate near Bristol. Beyond upgrading its current network, Aldi plans to roll out chargers at approximately 20 new stores each year as part of its expansion strategy.
Supporting sustainability and EV adoption
Jonathan Neale, Managing Director of National Real Estate at Aldi UK, said: 'We're committed to making sustainable choices more accessible for our customers, and we know many are looking for affordable, reliable and convenient ways to charge their cars. By expanding EV charging at more of our stores, we're helping to make that easier – and offering great-value charging while they shop.'
The rollout reinforces Aldi's long-term dedication to sustainability and supports the UK's shift towards electric vehicles. The government aims to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030, with all new vehicles required to be zero-emission by 2035.
