Motherwell and Wishaw MSP Clare Adamson has highlighted the range of support available to families across North Lanarkshire as pupils prepare to return to school.
With many households continuing to feel the pressure of rising living costs, Ms Adamson has welcomed measures designed to help parents and carers manage the expense of the new school term, including support with uniforms, school meals and the cost of starting school.
Best Start School Age Payment
Last year, 1,470 families in North Lanarkshire received the Best Start School Age Payment, a one-off payment of £331.95 to help eligible families with the costs associated with a child beginning primary school, including uniforms, shoes and school bags.
The support forms part of a wider package of assistance available to families across Scotland. More than 360,000 children are currently entitled to free school meals, including every pupil from P1 to P5, saving families around £450 per eligible child each year. The Scottish Government has also increased the minimum School Clothing Grant to £120 for primary pupils and £150 for secondary pupils.
MSP comments on financial pressures
Commenting, Ms Adamson said: “The start of a new school year is a special milestone for children and young people, but for many families it can also bring additional financial pressures.
“That’s why it’s so important that support is available to help parents and carers with the costs that come with going back to school.
“Last year, 1,470 families in North Lanarkshire received the Best Start School Age Payment, helping with the expense of uniforms, shoes and other essentials. Alongside free school meals and increased School Clothing Grants, this support is making a real difference to household budgets.
“At a time when many families are still facing significant cost-of-living challenges, these measures provide practical help where it is needed most.
“The contrast with England is clear. While support has been reduced or removed elsewhere, Scotland has chosen to invest in children and families, helping ensure that every child has the best possible start in life regardless of their circumstances.
“I know how much families across North Lanarkshire value this support, and I will continue working to ensure local people receive the help they need and deserve.”
