Two Miners Dead in Separate Queensland Incidents: Rockfall and Roof Collapse
Two miners killed in separate Queensland mine incidents

Tragedy has struck Queensland's mining sector twice in a single day, with two men losing their lives in separate incidents at private operations.

Gold Prospector Crushed by Boulder

A 58-year-old man died on Friday afternoon after being hit by a large rock while working at a private mining lease near Mount Britton. The incident occurred at approximately 2.40pm at a property roughly 50 kilometres from Nebo.

Forensic Crash Unit investigator Sergeant Michael Hollett detailed the events, explaining the man had exited his excavator to move closer to a rock face. "The large rock suddenly became displaced and injured his leg," Sergeant Hollett said. "It's caused enough injuries to his leg that it eventually claimed his life. Before anyone else could get there, he passed away."

The site, part of the historic Mount Britton Goldfield at Oaky Creek, has been known for gold deposits since 1881.

Second Fatality Deep Underground

In a separate and unrelated incident, a second man was found dead after becoming trapped 1km below ground. The roof of the mine, operated by Mammoth Underground Mine Management Pty Ltd at the Curragh Complex near Blackwater, collapsed abruptly on Friday.

The company confirmed the worker's death in a heartfelt statement. "This is heartbreaking news for our workmate's family and friends, and all of us at Mammoth Underground," they said. "We have spoken with his family to offer our sympathy and full support as they begin to come to terms with this tragic loss."

Investigations Launched

Police are preparing a report for the coroner regarding both fatalities. The primary investigative role has been assumed by the industry watchdog, Resources Safety and Health Queensland (RSHQ).

An RSHQ spokesperson confirmed they are aware of the incident involving the death of a worker on a small-scale mining lease in Central Queensland. "RSHQ's investigation is in its early stages following release of the scene by Police this morning," the spokesperson stated, adding that it is understood the deceased was working alone at the time.

Mammoth Underground emphasised that the safety and wellbeing of everyone at the mine is our most important priority and pledged support for all personnel affected by the devastating event.
