Tragedy at Cambridgeshire Anaerobic Digestion Plant
A 19-year-old girl has died following a serious industrial accident at her workplace in Cambridgeshire.
Žavinta Petrašiūtė lost her life on Monday afternoon at the Pretoria Energy plant in Mepal, near Chatteris. Police were called to assist the ambulance service at the anaerobic digestion facility at around 3pm.
It is believed the teenager was run over by a heavy-duty tractor at the site.
Community Mourns a 'Bright and Hardworking' Young Woman
Žavinta has been described as a 'bright, hardworking' young woman who was 'loved and appreciated by everyone who knew her.'
In an emotional online tribute, her father expressed the family's profound grief and gratitude for the support they have received. 'During this incredibly painful time of losing our daughter we never expected to receive so much kindness, unity and warmth from so many people,' he said.
He added that the moral and financial support had 'touched us deeply' and helped raise the funds needed to bring their daughter back home to Lithuania, a gesture that 'means more to us than words could ever express.'
Fundraiser and Ongoing Investigations
A fundraising page was swiftly established to support the family with the costs of repatriating Žavinta to her native Lithuania and for funeral expenses.
The campaign, organised by Ernestas Mag, has already surpassed its target, raising more than £25,000. He described the family as facing an 'unimaginable tragedy' and stated that their only wish is to lay Žavinta to rest in her homeland.
Cambridgeshire Constabulary confirmed that officers are carrying out enquiries into the incident. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has been informed and a spokesperson confirmed they are investigating the workplace accident alongside the police.
