Former Sky News presenter Darren McCaffrey has left fans bewildered after announcing a sudden international relocation and publicly appealing for help to find work in his new home.
A Surprising New Year Announcement
The 38-year-old broadcaster, who has worked for Sky News in two stints from 2009 to 2018 and again in 2024, shared the personal news in an Instagram video. Wearing a green North Face fleece and sunglasses, McCaffrey revealed he is "bouncing out of Britain" and moving to Toronto, Canada by the end of January.
While expressing excitement about the move, McCaffrey admitted the decision was also daunting. "It's not a city I know very well, and I'm not entirely sure what I am going to do for work," he confessed to his followers. He then made a direct plea for assistance, asking if anyone could provide "tips, recommendations, or introductions" in Toronto, adding that his direct messages were open for advice.
Mixed Reactions from Followers
The post prompted a flood of comments, with many fans expressing shock and offering best wishes for his new chapter. Supporters praised his hard work, particularly over the New Year period, and wished him luck.
However, not all responses were wholly positive. One commenter questioned the decision to move without a job lined up, branding the move "very irresponsible", given McCaffrey is reportedly single and without family in Canada. Other followers were initially confused, with some admitting they thought the announcement was a "wind-up" due to its unexpected nature.
A Storied Broadcasting Career
Darren McCaffrey is no stranger to high-profile media roles. During his time with Sky, he served as a UK political correspondent and the channel's Dublin correspondent.
His career also includes a significant period as political editor and a presenter for Euronews between 2018 and 2021. He later landed the role of political editor for GB News in 2021. McCaffrey has fronted programmes such as The Briefing with Darren McCaffrey and The Great British Breakfast, and also previously worked for the BBC before his return to Sky News last year.
His abrupt departure and public job search mark a surprising turn for the established journalist, leaving many to speculate on his next professional move in North America.
