NSW to Gain Extra Monday Holiday When Anzac Day Falls on Weekend
The Minns Labor government in New South Wales has officially confirmed a significant change to public holiday arrangements, ensuring residents will receive an additional Monday off when Anzac Day lands on a weekend. This legislative move brings NSW into line with Western Australia and the Australian Capital Territory, which already grant substitute holidays in such circumstances.
Legislative Enshrinement and Future Dates
Premier Chris Minns announced on Friday that the public holiday has now been enshrined in legislation, providing certainty for workers and businesses. Anzac Day is scheduled to fall on a Saturday in both 2026 and 2027, prompting the introduction of a substitute public holiday on the following Monday for those years and beyond. Commemorative services will continue to be held nationwide on April 25, maintaining the solemnity of the national day of remembrance.
Minns emphasised the dual purpose of the change, stating, 'We expect big participation, major crowds and full civic participation in Anzac Day on the 25th of April and then, following that, on the Monday we'll have an additional public holiday.' This approach balances respect for tradition with practical benefits for the community.
National and State Holiday Comparisons
Anzac Day is one of ten public holidays observed nationally in 2026, though the total number varies across states and territories due to additional local observances. Most Australians receive three or four state-based public holidays annually, including those in Victoria, Queensland, the ACT, and South Australia. In contrast, NSW has typically had just two extra public holidays—the King's Birthday in June and Labour Day in October.
This new addition marks a notable shift, bringing NSW closer to the national average. By comparison, Christmas Island observes six additional public holidays, including two marking Chinese New Year in mid-February, highlighting the diversity in regional holiday schedules across Australia.
Implications for Workers and Economy
The introduction of this extra Monday holiday is expected to boost leisure activities and retail sectors on those days, while ensuring workers are fairly compensated for time off. It also addresses long-standing calls for consistency in public holiday entitlements when national days like Anzac Day coincide with weekends, preventing potential confusion and disputes over pay and leave.
With the legislation now in place, NSW residents can look forward to enhanced holiday planning and participation in Anzac commemorations, reinforcing the state's commitment to honouring this important day while providing practical benefits for its citizens.
