St. Clair County Sheriff Mat King explained the sequence of events to local media. "Hagle saw his partner go down," King stated. "He understood Kammer was unresponsive and made a desperate effort to get him out of the well." After calling for emergency assistance, Hagle entered the hazardous space in an attempt to rescue his unconscious coworker.
