Tragic Workplace Incident Claims Lives of Two Young Michigan Workers
A devastating workplace accident in Michigan has claimed the lives of two young men who were overcome by toxic gas while performing routine maintenance. Daniel Hagle, aged 20, and his colleague Michael Kammer Jr., aged 21, both lost their lives in a tragic incident that unfolded during a well-cleaning job in Clyde Township.
Deadly Chemical Reaction in Confined Space
The fatal incident occurred on Tuesday when the two workers were servicing a well at a recently sold property. According to authorities, Kammer was using muriatic acid for cleaning purposes within a confined space beneath the porch when a chemical reaction occurred. This reaction produced dangerous hydrogen sulfide gas, which quickly filled the enclosed area.
St. Clair County Sheriff Mat King explained the sequence of events to local media. "Hagle saw his partner go down," King stated. "He understood Kammer was unresponsive and made a desperate effort to get him out of the well." After calling for emergency assistance, Hagle entered the hazardous space in an attempt to rescue his unconscious coworker.
Rescue Attempt Ends in Tragedy
Tragically, both men were overcome by the toxic fumes before they could be extracted from the dangerous environment. Emergency responders arrived at the scene but initially had to maintain distance due to the hazardous conditions. "The deputies could smell gas from where they exited their vehicles near the road," Sheriff King reported. "They realized they could obviously be overcome by these fumes as well and had to back off until firefighters arrived with proper protective equipment."
Both workers were rushed to a nearby hospital but were pronounced dead upon arrival. The medical examiner is currently working to confirm the official cause of death for both young men.
Families and Community in Mourning
The sudden loss has devastated both families and the broader community. Cherrie Hagle, Daniel's mother, described her son as someone who "loved people - his friends, family, community - even strangers." She shared with the Daily Mail that her son was known for his compassionate nature, particularly toward military veterans.
Jenny Kammer, Michael's mother, recounted the traumatic experience of watching first responders retrieve her son's body. "I couldn't breathe. I couldn't do nothing. I just froze," she said emotionally. "No mother should have never had to see that." She added that her son was brought out without clothing due to chemical contamination on his work attire.
Safety Concerns and Investigation
Authorities have highlighted the particular danger posed by confined spaces in such work environments. Sheriff King noted that while the cleaning substance had been used previously without incident, the confined nature of the workspace created uniquely hazardous conditions. "When the acid interacted with a mineral or chemical in that well, it off-gassed," he explained. "That variable of the confined space seems to be the difference."
Three additional individuals were hospitalized for gas exposure during the incident but are expected to make full recoveries. The tragedy has raised important questions about workplace safety protocols for hazardous material handling in confined spaces.
Remembering the Victims
Both young men are being remembered for their strong work ethic and community spirit. Daniel Hagle was described by his parents as "the most hardworking boy" who excelled academically and contributed significantly to community initiatives. He was an honors student who helped organize clothing donation drives and volunteered regularly at a local church.
Michael Kammer had been performing well-cleaning work since his teenage years, according to his father. His GoFundMe page remembered him as "a great kid who loved his family, hunting, and his coon dogs." The page added, "He was always ready to lend a hand and brought joy to everyone around him."
Community Response and Support
The local community has rallied around both grieving families in the aftermath of the tragedy. Vigils have been organized at the local high school, candlelight memorials have been held, and a park bench is being dedicated in honor of Daniel Hagle. GoFundMe campaigns have been established to help both families cover unexpected funeral expenses and memorial costs.
Daniel Hagle's fundraising page paid tribute to his final actions, stating, "His bravery and compassion in his final moments are a testament to the kind of person he was - always willing to help others, even at great personal risk." The page described him as a devoted son, brother, and friend known for his warm heart and sense of humor.
Michael Kammer's page captured the suddenness of the tragedy with the words, "He got up to go to work, never expecting that he would not return home." The description noted that this "freak environmental accident has shaken our community" and left his family facing unexpected burdens.
Both young men leave behind grieving families and a community grappling with the loss of two promising lives cut short in a preventable workplace tragedy.
