During a candid appearance on the Aspire by Emma Grede podcast last year, Meghan Markle shared an intimate glimpse into her family life in California, revealing how she and Prince Harry are teaching their two children, Archie and Lilibet, an important lesson about the value of money through their family garden.
Gardening as a Life Lesson
Meghan explained that the family tends to a vegetable garden together at their Montecito home. She said: "Gardening is really great for children. It teaches them patience, it teaches them to value and appreciate their food. So you start from seed and wait and watch it grow." Once the garden yields results, Archie and Lilibet earn pocket money by selling their harvest at a makeshift farmer's market stall to neighbors.
Understanding Costs and Prices
The Duchess elaborated on the financial lesson: "Well now do you want to sell your harvest? Do you want to share it with our community? And also, what do you want to do with those funds once you have them? So really starting to understand, as they're learning counting and numbers, that there is a cost and a price for things, and I think that's key for children to understand that. Especially children who are very lucky to have a home that has privilege, you need to know that."
Instilling Values Beyond Money
Meghan emphasized that this practice is part of a broader upbringing: "It's just like manners and taking care of the things around you, there's a value on things, and for my husband and I, it's really important that they understand that."
Subtle Swipe at Royal Family
Elsewhere in the podcast, host Emma Grede questioned Meghan about her public narrative and celebrity status. When asked if she would rewrite her public narrative, Meghan responded: "Yes, I would ask people to tell the truth."
