Luke Shaw must accept pay cut for new Man Utd deal

Manchester United have reportedly made their stance clear on the possibility of a new contract for Luke Shaw, and the left-back will need to take a significant reduction in salary if he is to be awarded a new deal at Old Trafford. Shaw’s current contract is set to expire in the summer of 2027, with United also holding the option of a 12-month extension.

Contract Situation

Shaw faces the prospect of entering the final year of his contract at United unless the club activates the option of a further year. According to The Sun, Shaw will need to take a pay cut in order to sign a new contract, with the defender currently earning around £200,000 per week. United will not offer the same wages with their new contract proposal, and it remains to be seen if the England international will agree to the Red Devils’ terms.

Similar to Maguire's Deal

There has also been a suggestion that, if United and Shaw come to an agreement, it would be on similar terms to what the club agreed for Harry Maguire earlier this year. Maguire’s new contract was a one-year extension until the summer of 2027, with the option of a further 12 months.

Shaw's Role at United

Shaw has been a key player for United during his time at Old Trafford, particularly last season on their way to finishing third in the Premier League and qualifying for the Champions League. The 30-year-old was named in the starting line-up for all 38 of United’s Premier League matches last term, playing the full 90 minutes in 23 of those games. Shaw will hope to be an important player for United next season, with head coach Michael Carrick now in permanent charge, and the club is reported to be exploring the possibility of signing a new left-back following the departure of Tyrell Malacia as a free agent.
