Live-in caretaker job at Scottish Highlands estate

Inverskilavulin Estate, a luxury self-catering lodge collection near Fort William in the Scottish Highlands, is hiring a live-in caretaker. The full-time role comes with a salary of between £26,500 and £38,500 per year and includes accommodation, offering a potential fresh start for someone seeking a change of scenery.

Role details and working hours

The caretaker will be responsible for the day-to-day running and upkeep of the estate, which also offers food and drink services. Working hours are generally between 9am and 5pm, though the schedule will depend on how busy the estate is in a given week.

The estate welcomes applications from individuals, couples, and even families. Couples applying where the non-applicant has relevant skills are asked to include these in the application and attach their CV. If a successful candidate relocates with a partner, there may be an opportunity for the partner to undertake additional paid work on the estate on a separate casual basis, depending on their skills and the needs of the business.

Duties and responsibilities

The successful applicant will take responsibility for the condition, presentation, and smooth day-to-day running of the properties. Duties include maintaining cleanliness and organisation of bedrooms, kitchens, bathrooms, and living areas, as well as performing routine dusting, vacuuming, mopping, laundry, and linen management.

Other tasks include conducting regular inspections to identify safety concerns, carrying out maintenance like repairs and electrical troubleshooting, managing inventory of cleaning supplies and tools, responding quickly to urgent maintenance issues, and working with the management team to arrange repairs and special events. The role also involves seasonal outdoor jobs like grass cutting and strimming.

Requirements and application

Candidates must have previous experience with housekeeping and property maintenance in a similar environment. Strong attention to detail, good organisational skills, and the ability to juggle various tasks are important. Applicants should be able to carry out basic repairs, troubleshoot common household issues, use Microsoft Office applications, be willing to work early mornings and weekends, and hold a valid driving license.

The job listing states: "We are looking for an experienced and capable caretaker (live-in) to take responsibility for the day-to-day running, presentation and upkeep of our private estate and self-catering accommodation near Fort William. This is a hands-on role covering both front-of-house and back-of-house operations."

It adds: "This role combines housekeeping, basic property maintenance, basic groundskeeping, guest liaison, contractor coordination and the practical organisation of the properties. The right person will be equally comfortable dealing professionally with a guest or contractor as they are cleaning a bathroom, changing beds, cutting grass or carrying out a minor repair."
