Charlie Dimmock, the renowned gardening expert and former star of the BBC's Ground Force, has been a fixture on British television for nearly three decades. Now 59, she continues to inspire audiences with her horticultural expertise, but what is her life like away from the cameras?
Early Life and Education in Hampshire
Charlie grew up in the Hampshire village of Wellow, nestled near the New Forest. She attended Wellow Primary School and later the Mountbatten School in Romsey. It was at Mountbatten School that her passion for gardening first blossomed, with gardening lessons forming part of the curriculum during spring and summer terms.
As a teenager, she worked part-time at a local garden centre in Romsey during weekends and school holidays. This early experience paved the way for her career in amenity horticulture, which she pursued in Winchester. She later earned a distinction in her BTEC Diploma in Amenity Horticulture and a National Technical Certificate in Turf Culture and Sporting Management while studying in Somerset. Additionally, she spent a year training at the prestigious Chelsea Physic Garden in London.
Career Breakthrough and Television Stardom
After completing her studies, Charlie secured a position at Romsey Garden Centre, where she met TV producer John Thornicroft. Thornicroft would later produce Ground Force, the show that made Charlie a household name alongside co-stars Alan Titchmarsh and Tommy Walsh. The trio formed a strong bond both on and off screen.
Reflecting on their dynamic, Charlie told the Warrington Guardian: "When we first started filming we were polite to each other for the first two series but by the third series we were like family. My main memory of Ground Force was laughing lots. It was the same team week in, week out, as well as the same production and crew."
Despite rumours of on-set arguments, Charlie denied any falling out and confirmed she remains in contact with her former colleagues. She shared with World of Cruising: "I haven't seen them recently, but we're still in contact. Occasionally, we chat or bump into each other. Tommy teases me that we're getting old now, which is true, but we have loads of happy memories of filming – lots and lots of laughter."
Life in the New Forest
Charlie has stayed true to her roots and continues to live in the New Forest, where she owns a home and keeps a horse. In 2011, her property underwent renovations, including a new kitchen and the installation of a £9,000 Aga, as reported by MailOnline.
