BGL Contracts Collapses, All 40 Jobs Lost

BGL Contracts Limited, a Glasgow-based electrical contracting firm established in 2009, has collapsed after nearly 20 years of trading, resulting in the loss of all 40 jobs. The company entered administration on June 30, with Geoffrey Isaac Jacobs and Alistair McAlinden of Interpath Advisory appointed as joint administrators.

Insurmountable Financial Challenges

The administrators cited "insurmountable challenges" including rising costs, low contract margins, and the rephasing of major contracts. The firm operated in a "highly competitive market" and struggled to secure fresh investment. Alistair McAlinden, managing director at Interpath, stated: "Businesses like BGL are being squeezed by rising costs and unforgiving contracts which have left them highly vulnerable to insolvency."

Impact on Employees

All 40 employees were made redundant immediately following the appointment of administrators. The administrators are now supporting affected staff in submitting claims to the Redundancy Payments Service. McAlinden added: "Our immediate priority is to support impacted employees."

Broader Context of Scottish Insolvencies

BGL Contracts is the latest in a series of Scottish company collapses amid challenging trading conditions. Last week, Merchant City Distributors Limited, a kitchen specialist in East Kilbride, entered administration with the loss of 18 jobs and over £1 million in debt. Additionally, outdoors brand Millets is closing its Glasgow branch, leaving only stores in England and Wales.

Administrators Seek Interested Parties

Parties with an interest in the business or its assets are asked to contact Interpath Advisory. The administrators noted that despite extensive efforts, the company could not meet its financial obligations, leading to the appointment of joint administrators.
