Confronting Life Admin Boosts Wellbeing and Finances

New research reveals that a staggering 85% of UK adults struggle to manage their life admin, despite spending an average of five hours per week on these tasks. The survey, conducted by Mortar Research on behalf of Starling Bank, highlights the widespread 'head-in-the-sand' approach that many adopt, leading to significant financial and legal consequences.

Respondents reported paying an average of £346 in late fees and fines for missed deadlines, while one in three admitted to breaking the law by neglecting responsibilities such as booking an MOT, obtaining planning permission, or responding to a jury summons. Financial psychotherapist Vicky Reynal notes that procrastination often stems from underlying anxiety and shame, which can be alleviated by tackling tasks head-on.

Reynal explains that completing admin tasks provides a sense of relief and peace of mind, helping to avoid the build-up of anxiety and irritability. Taking small steps can build confidence and a sense of control over one's life, which in turn improves relationships and fosters a culture of self-care. 'When people feel more in control, they tend to be more pleasant to be around,' she says.

The benefits extend beyond immediate stress reduction; Reynal observes a ripple effect where clients start to improve other areas of their lives, such as exercise, after addressing their finances. She recommends automating processes like saving and budgeting to reduce friction, and suggests hosting an 'admin night' with friends to collectively tackle mundane tasks.
