Extreme Heatwave Hits Western Europe
Large parts of western Europe are experiencing another extreme heatwave this summer, with temperatures soaring into the high 30s Celsius across Spain and France. The UK is also bracing for high temperatures up to the mid-30s in the south and south-west of England today and tomorrow, prompting a public health alert.
Public Health Alerts Issued
A high temperature warning has been issued for a dozen counties in the Republic of Ireland. Authorities are advising residents to look after vulnerable family and friends, avoid prolonged heat exposure, and be vigilant for wildfires. The heatwave is expected to continue into next week, according to forecasters.
Infrastructure Under Strain
The extreme weather is testing the continent’s infrastructure. A reactor at the Golfech nuclear power plant near Toulouse, France, has been temporarily shut down due to the ongoing heatwave. Officials urge everyone to stay cool and keep drinking fresh water.
