TikToker's Campaign to Buy Spirit Airlines Raises Over $132 Million
TikToker's Spirit Airlines Bid Raises $132M

A TikTok campaign initiated by content creator Hunter Peterson has garnered over $132 million in non-binding pledges aimed at purchasing and revitalising Spirit Airlines following the budget carrier's abrupt cessation of operations.

Campaign Details

The initiative, which envisions a community-owned airline, has attracted interest from more than 170,000 individuals. Peterson's initial video on the platform amassed 6.1 million views, propelling the campaign into the spotlight. Spirit Airlines announced on May 2 that it was shutting down immediately, citing years of financial losses and an inability to secure hundreds of millions of dollars in necessary liquidity.

Obstacles Ahead

The proposed acquisition faces substantial legal and financial challenges. These include stringent regulations from the U.S. Department of Transportation and the requirement for over $1 billion to settle debts and resume flight operations. Critics have questioned the validity of the non-binding pledges and the feasibility of the proposed leadership structure.

Supporters, however, argue that maintaining a low-cost carrier option in the market is crucial for consumers. The campaign continues to gain traction online, though experts remain sceptical about its ultimate success given the complex regulatory and financial landscape.
